ACACIA

The genus Acacia is found in many warm parts of the world, including Africa. They are leguminous trees and shrubs, with nitrogen-fixing root nodules. They typically have spines on the stems, finely divided pinnate leaves and flowers arranged in pompoms or catkins. They drop their leaves in periods of drought.

Two species of Acacia are common in the warmer deserts (Sonoran and California) of North America - the catclaw acacia and the whitethorn acacia.

Whitethorn acacia (Acacia constricta). The thorns are about 2 cm long
