ARIZONA BARREL (Ferocactus wislizenii)

The Arizona barrel is a common component of the vegetation in the Arizona Upland sub-division of the Sonoran Desert. It is seen here with other cacti - a young (30-40 year) saguaro at the extreme right, several older saguaros (rear), a pencil cholla (left foreground) and a prickly pear (behind the barrel). The other main components here are the green-barked trees (paloverde) and triangle-leaf bursage (the low-growing shrub over most of the soil surface). The barrel cactus has yellow fruits, persisting from the previous flowering season.
