MOJAVE DESERT

South-facing hillside dominated by teddy bear cholla (Opuntia
bigelovii). Although these plants often flower and
produce fruits, the seeds are usually sterile. Instead,
these plants depend on vegetative propagation, when stem
segments become detached and root in the soil. The stems
are covered with sharp spines, which attach to animals'
coats, leading to dispersalover larger distances.
